Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp interested in Bayern Munich star who could make sensational Premier League return
Journalist Phil McNulty of the BBC has weighed in with his opinion on who will come out on top at the end of the Premier League season.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the journalist has suggested Manchester City will pip Liverpool to the title once again.
In his column for BBC Sport, McNulty wrote ‘Manchester City have been champions four of the past five seasons and I expect another straight fight with Liverpool to end with them on top again.’
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, according to Spanish outlet Nacional.
The former Man City winger joined the German champions in 2020 for a fee of £55m but only started 22 league games last season.
The report states that Sane's game time at Bayern could be affected due to the arrival of Sadio Mane and he is seriously considering leaving the Bundesliga.
The fee that would unlock a move to Anfield is said to be around £46m and Klopp is said to be a big admirer of the winger
Sane spent 4 years in Manchester and in that time he won every domestic trophy there is to win in England, as well as earning himself the PFA young player of the year following City’s record-breaking 100 point season in 2017/18.
Whilst it would be strange to see Sane in a Liverpool shirt, there is no doubt that the German would thrive under the influence of Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside
The Reds have had one of the most dangerous attacks in world football over the past few seasons, but the departures of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have left them looking sparse in depth.
Diogo Jota’s hamstring issues have left Liverpool with only two outright wingers in Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.
However, having already spent £85 million on Darwin Nunez, it is unlikely that the Reds would be willing to spend so much for Sane.
He continued that Liverpool fans should expect to see their side ‘fight on all fronts again this term and challenge City all the way, securing at least one trophy.’
For Liverpool fans though, their holy grail at the end of a season will always be represented in the form of a Premier League trophy.
Their title celebrations were dampened at the end of the 2019/20 season due to COVID-19 restrictions.
And after having waited so long to see their team lift the trophy, it hurt many a Liverpool fan to have to watch the celebrations take place at an empty Anfield through a television screen.
Kopites will be desperate to see their team win that trophy again soon so they can enjoy the full experience of celebrating title success.
But as McNulty points out, there is one rather large obstacle in their way – Manchester City.
After just about beating Liverpool to the title last year, City have strengthened this summer bringing in the likes of Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, and Julian Alvarez.
Their key objective this season will be to find long-awaited success in the Champions League, but Pep Guardiola certainly won’t let his team take their foot off the ball in domestic competition.
If Liverpool are to beat City to the title this year, they’ll need their ageing midfield to remain fit for the entirety of the season, they’ll need goals from new recruit Darwin Nuñez, and they’ll have to hope Mo Salah’s performance levels don’t dip despite his age.
Winning the title might be too high of a mountain to climb for Liverpool this time round.
